Adult Autism Spectrum Assessment
Comprehensive telehealth evaluation for adults seeking diagnostic clarity
Many adults reach adulthood without a clear understanding of why social interaction, sensory experience, and daily routines have always felt different for them. A formal diagnostic evaluation can provide that clarity — and lead to self-understanding, appropriate support, and, where needed, access to accommodations and services.
Our adult autism assessment is conducted entirely via secure video telehealth. It was designed specifically for adults and combines a thorough clinical interview with standardized psychological measures and brief cognitive screening.
What the Evaluation Includes
Before your first appointment, you will complete a set of standardized questionnaires at home. These include measures of autism-related traits and other symptoms. We also ask one or two people who know you well — a partner, close friend, sibling, or parent — to complete brief informant questionnaires about your current functioning and, if possible, your early childhood development. All forms are sent and tracked electronically, and our office manages the process so that everything is ready before your first session.
The evaluation itself consists of two 60-minute clinical interviews conducted by Dr. Newman via secure video. During these sessions, he will review your developmental, medical, psychiatric, educational, and social history; conduct a mental status examination; and systematically evaluate each DSM-5 criterion area for autism spectrum disorder across both childhood and adulthood. He will also administer a brief set of cognitive and neuropsychological screening measures — including tasks assessing verbal reasoning, attention, memory, processing speed, and executive function — to provide a fuller picture of your cognitive profile and to help distinguish autism from conditions that can look similar, such as ADHD, anxiety, OCD, or the effects of trauma.
A separate 60-minute testing session is scheduled to complete the cognitive screening battery. This session is billed directly to you (not through insurance) and is described under Costs, below.
After scoring and analysis, a 45- to 60-minute feedback session is scheduled to review the findings with you in detail. This session is conducted as a therapeutic conversation — not just a data summary — and includes discussion of what the results mean for your daily life, your relationships, and your next steps. You will also receive a written report summarizing the evaluation, diagnostic conclusions, and individualized recommendations.
How This Evaluation Is Different
This is not a brief screening or a questionnaire-only assessment. It integrates clinical interview, multiple standardized rating scales with published normative scoring, informant data, and objective cognitive measures into a single cohesive evaluation. The result is a diagnostic opinion based on the standard that current practice guidelines recommend for adult autism diagnosis.
Adults who have gone undiagnosed often present with significant camouflaging — the learned habit of masking autistic traits in social settings. This can make autism easy to miss, particularly in women, gender-diverse individuals, and people with strong verbal and intellectual abilities. Our assessment includes a dedicated measure of camouflaging behavior and gives specific clinical attention to the way masking can obscure the presentation. The cognitive screening component also helps clarify whether attention, memory, or executive functioning difficulties are better explained by ADHD, mood or anxiety disorders, or trauma, rather than autism alone — a critical distinction that many evaluations do not systematically address.
Costs
Three of the four sessions are billed to your health insurance under standard mental health procedure codes. One session — the cognitive testing component — is billed directly to you at a flat fee. The table below summarizes the evaluation structure and estimated costs.

1. Diagnostic Interview: 60-min clinical interview, history, and DSM-5 review. Insurance Copay only*
2. Clinical Interview: 60-min continued interview with embedded cognitive measures. Insurance Copay only*
3. Cognitive Testing: 60-min testing session to complete cognitive screening battery. Billed to You (directly)$240
4. Feedback Session: 45–60 min review of results, diagnosis, and recommendations. Insurance Copay only*
Estimated total out-of-pocket (insured patient, deductible met) $310–$340
* Copay amounts depend on your specific insurance plan, typically $20–$35 per session for in-network mental health services. If you have not met your annual deductible, your share may be higher for the insured sessions. We are happy to verify your benefits before scheduling.
For patients without insurance or who prefer to self-pay, the complete evaluation is available for a flat fee of $950.
What You Receive
At the conclusion of the evaluation, you receive a written clinical report that includes your diagnostic findings, all test scores with normative interpretation, a discussion of differential diagnosis, and specific recommendations tailored to your situation. The report is yours — you may share it with your therapist, physician, employer, school, or any other party at your discretion. Many clients use their report to access workplace accommodations, inform therapy goals, pursue vocational support, or simply to better understand themselves.
Who This Evaluation Is For
This evaluation is designed for adults (age 18 and older) who suspect they may be autistic, who have received inconclusive or conflicting prior evaluations, or who were diagnosed in childhood and are seeking an updated assessment. It is also appropriate for adults who have been diagnosed with anxiety, depression, ADHD, or OCD and wonder whether autism may be an underlying or co-occurring factor. We welcome individuals of all gender identities, cultural backgrounds, and life circumstances, and we give specific attention to presentations that are commonly missed in traditional evaluation settings.
